RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a standard file format that allows subscribers to access frequently updated content from a particular website source. RSS feeds usually provide some high level information, such as an article headline and the first few lines of the article’s text, along with a link to the website for a full version of the article.
RSS feeds are a convenient way to save time and stay up-to-date by monitoring a number of your favourite news and information sources in one place. When you subscribe to an RSS feed, you will automatically be notified of new content as it is posted, and will no longer need to check the website regularly for updates.
RSS feeds are a good alternative to subscribing to updates through email. You can avoid missing important updates when they get lost in your mailbox or get caught in your spam filter, and you usually don’t need to provide personal information, such as your email address to subscribe.
Some Web browsers will allow you to automatically read and subscribe to RSS feeds. If you are using a recent version of your Web browser, you will likely be able to add a feed by clicking on the RSS Icon located beside it.
If your browser does not support RSS feeds, you will need to install an RSS reader, also known as a news aggregator or a client on your computer, smart phone or tablet. You can either choose to download an RSS reader to your device, or subscribe to an online RSS reader. You can find RSS readers by searching online through your browser, there are many different types, and some are available free of charge.
Once you have downloaded or subscribed to an RSS reader, you can look for instructions, usually included with your reader, on how to add new feeds. You may be able to do this simply by clicking on the RSS icon, or you may have to copy and paste a link to the feed into the appropriate field your feed reader. You can then follow your reader’s instructions to customize how you want the feed to be displayed, as well as how you will be notified of updates.
Your reader will run a script every few minutes, automatically updating the feed with new posts. When you click on a headline in the feed, you will be directed to the full article.
